Begin Your Dividend Investing (DI) Journey towards Financial Independence (FI)
All beginner investors have a dilemma and high level of anxiety that many so-called experts fail to comprehend and empathize with. When I started my FI journey in late 2011, I had a steep learning curve and diving into area of personal investing was not easy at-all as it was never taught to me formally. After all, you are putting your hard-earned money to task and never know whether you are getting into some sort of Ponzi scheme and really need something that will grow your money.
I’m of the mold of Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and therefore started a journey of learning about investments with full devotion. I read many-2 investment books with big names like Benjamin Graham’s Intelligent Investor, William Berstein’s Four Pillars of Investing, Your Money or Your life, The Millionaire Next Door, etc. and tried to learn: “What to buy” and “How to buy” stocks to get financially independent (FI).
While these investment books were good and some extra-ordinary and enunciated great principles, however, I could not figure out “how” to start implementing it. So, frankly speaking, I almost gave up on investing my money, especially, after watching stock market swooning up-and-down in its own tune like a Pied-Piper of Hamelin in 2000 and 2007/2008, what a roller-coaster it was and almost thought that the stock market is rigged against common investors and there is no way I can make money with stock investments. But, with my can-do attitude, I kept chugging along and read few more investment books till I started to hear about Dividend Investing (DI) and Dividend Growth Investing (DGI). I had an AHA moment like Newton who discovered gravity while sitting under tree and watching apple falling down and not up OR Archimedes who discovered buoyancy while sitting in water tub and floating.
Eureka! I then realized that this is what I have been missing since last 10 years or so, my friends, miss I did. However, to my disappointment, I did not know how to implement this so called newly discovered DI or DGI principle. So, my search “how to do it” continued.
One day, while Amazon’ing: searching on Amazon with “Dividend Investing”, I found a book: Dividend Investing: A Step-By-Step Guide To Get Rich, and this was the kind of book that I have been looking literally for years and asking this question to myself over and over again for ages: I need to start but how to start since I did not know how and where to begin. To my surprise, it was precisely the book that I have been looking. Now looking back, I find it embarrassing that I should have known about DI 🙂 but, not back then. Thanks to this book, I started my Dividend Investing (DI) to achieve Financial Independence and feel grateful that I did.
Dividend Investing (DI)
I very well understand the dilemma and challenges of beginners that I had encountered. Above step-by-step book was god-sent and I followed the step-by-step instructions as mentioned in the book for Dividend Re-Investment Plan (DRIP) using Computershare along with Sharebuilder. I made my first investment in Altria Group, Inc., MO on Dec 09, 2011, due to relatively high dividends but not too high, since, too high dividends may be sometimes risky. After my first investment, I made my second investment in Wal-Mart, WMT on Dec 20, 2011 since it is the largest retailer in the world and will keep growing as population keeps growing 🙂 and I have been hooked to Dividend Investing (DI) since then.
Learning to Walk:
Later on, I discovered many blogs like Get Rich Slowly, Dividend Mantra, The Dividend Network and many others, mentioned in my BlogRoll, and now, started my own blog where I show my progress towards Financial Independence (FI) using Dividend Investing (DI) philosophy and learn together as we make progress in this FI journey and achieve new heights. DI was the missing link in my armor that I wish I had known long time back. But, it’s never late, my friends. You can start your FI journey using the resources as mentioned in blogroll and reading above books.
All the best on your FI journey.
